Hailing from a family where the traditions of Judaism were an afterthought at best, he has gradually adopted a number of observances into his life. With the encouragement of rabbis and other mentors, he now puts on tefillin once a week, buys only kosher meat and is a semi-regular synagogue attendee. He and his wife have just enrolled their children in after-school Hebrew lessons. Possibly it was rude of me, but I couldn’t help laughing at him. When you say the words baal teshuvah, people instantly think of a full-on returnee to yiddishkeit; a card-carrying black-hatter, who’s made a total commitment to an Orthodox way of life. But the word does not necessarily mean that.

My daughter is a baalat teshuva and is getting married with another baal teshuva this coming month. The problem she is facing now is how does she do the counting?? When should she go to the mikveh? Thanks for your prompt answer.

Do you have a source for this answer? I am uncomfortable accepting that if one is a ba’alat teshuva at thirteen she would be dateable to a kohen where if she was fourteen it would become problematic. There needs to be some quantifiable way to establish when she gains a chezkat zonah. You said you’d clarify. Is there a chezkas kashrus? And if so, perhaps it is “figured out” by her silence. She should speak up if she knows the situation to be problematic.
On the other hand, maybe this can’t be resolved by simply asking the question. Perhaps like a shevuyah she is inherently suspect as Baby Seal argues. Intuitively I tend to agree that someone needs to ask the question.

I grew up in a home with parents who, while proudly Jewish, were non-observant. I am now a Baal Teshuvah as is my wife same kind of background , and as I have learnt I have picked up quite a few discrepancies in the customs I was taught growing up. The customs my father keep seem to be a mix of Sephardi, Ashkenazi and Yekke.
I have no idea where he got such a conglomeration since all eight of my great grandparents are from Lithuania although three of my grandparents were born in South Africa.
Marriage During The Aseres Yimei Teshuva 1. Harav Ephraim Zalman Margalios zt”l, in his Sefer Mateh Ephraim (), writes that the custom is to refrain from marrying during the Aseres Yimei Teshuvah (Ten Days of Repentance, beginning with Rosh Hashana and ending with Yom Kippur).
An online diary of one Jew’s journey towards mitzvah observance. Thursday, May 11, White Wine for Shabbat Kiddush After my gleeful realization that my brother is coming for Shabbos tomorrow, I started rumaging around my apartment, making sure I had enough of everything. My brother is bringing the challahs, which is good, because I forgot to special order the small ones I like my husband and I can never eat all of the big challahs.
Then I start to check out the wine situation and realize that I only have white wine. I wonder to myself, can you use white wine for kiddush? No one in my family has ever used white wine for kiddush. Even though most of my family is not observant, we always used either kosher red wine or grape juice. I don’t want to trek down to the wine store which interestingly has a large selection of kosher wines so I put “white wine for kiddush” and the word ‘Shabbat’ into google and this is the first result:

Because his father, Alexander Stirling Calder, received public commissions, the family traversed the country throughout Calder’s childhood. Calder was encouraged to create, and from the age of eight he always had his own workshop wherever the family lived. For Christmas in , Calder presented his parents with two of his first sculptures, a tiny dog and duck cut from a brass sheet and bent into formation.
The duck is kinetic—it rocks back and forth when tapped. Even at age eleven, his facility in handling materials was apparent. Despite his talents, Calder did not originally set out to become an artist. He instead enrolled at the Stevens Institute of Technology after high school and graduated in with an engineering degree. Calder worked for several years after graduation at various jobs, including as a hydraulics and automotive engineer, timekeeper in a logging camp, and fireman in a ship’s boiler room.
While serving in the latter occupation, on a ship from New York bound for San Francisco, Calder awoke on the deck to see both a brilliant sunrise and a scintillating full moon; each was visible on opposite horizons the ship then lay off the Guatemalan coast. The experience made a lasting impression on Calder: Calder committed to becoming an artist shortly thereafter, and in he moved to New York and enrolled at the Art Students League.
He also took a job illustrating for the National Police Gazette, which sent him to the Ringling Bros. The circus became a lifelong interest of Calder’s, and after moving to Paris in , he created his Cirque Calder, a complex and unique body of art.

The guest of honor, who in all probability planned it for himself? Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, whose birthday bash we read about in the book of Genesis. Why the strange neglect of what we would think is a significant day worthy of celebrating and rejoicing?
Hashem accepts our teshuva, if it sincere and comes from our hearts. But not every person will. Some are narrow-minded cowards. And you know what, in my opinion, a person who rejects a baal teshuva, rejects the Torah itself.
Theodor Herzl , founder of the modern Zionist movement, was an assimilated Austrian Jew. At first, most of those immigrating to Palestine were Orthodox Jews who moved due to the holiness of the Land of Israel and their wish to be buried in Jerusalem due to the belief that the Messiah will resurrect those interred in Jerusalem before the rest of the world.
With the onset of numerous pogroms throughout Eastern Europe, some Jews moved to the Holy Land —”made aliyah”—citing security, freedom of religion, and strong Zionist affinities. During the first wave — of Zionist aliyah , and especially during the Second Aliyah — the Jewish population of Ottoman Palestine , consisting mainly of secular or nontraditional Jews, greatly increased. These immigrants and their offspring founded cities such as Tel Aviv and established kibbutzim inspired by socialist theory, which was not necessarily connected to Judaism as a religion or a set of values.
As the number of new immigrants increased, so did the proportion of secular Jews. Up to and during the establishment of the State of Israel , the number of religious Jews was relatively minor. Religion in Israel The hilonim of Israel are embroiled in many disagreements with the religious, particularly Haredi , population. The conflicts resonate from the Haredim’s unwillingness to serve in the Israel Defense Forces , the Haredi groups that oppose the state of Israel, the Haredi lobby’s support of the ban on pork in Israel, and the mandatory closing of stores during the Jewish Sabbath.

DescriptionRecent decades have seen an influx of baalei teshuva in the Orthodox Jewish community; individuals who were Jewish and not raised religious, but chose to become religious on their own. Limited existing research indicates poor levels of family cohesion and parental warmth, increased behavioral problems amongst children, and increased parental anxiety around parenting in baalei teshuva families. Religious identity development theory indicates that an authoritarian parenting style impedes the autonomous process critical to religious identity development, which may present concern for baalei teshuva parents; however, scant research exists to confirm the veracity of this theory in this population.
This study is critical in evaluating parenting style as perceived by adult children of baalei teshuva and its subsequent influence on religious value transmission. Chi square analysis indicated significantly higher levels of perceived authoritarian parenting by children of baalei teshuva. Study findings substantiate previous anecdotal evidence and raise concern for the emotional health and religious value transmission in the baal teshuva family.
Study findings were limited by low male response rates, and further research must overcome cultural impediments to male access of internet-based research. Given the significance of these findings, implications for the baal teshuva parent, mental health professionals, and the greater Jewish community are vast. Utilization of the results should guide implementation of future interventions at the organizational, community, and individual levels.

With that said, I would like to give my insight to possibly help the BT navigate the complex world of shidduch dating. As the frum community becomes more open mostly due to the internet forcing some people to look at their stupidity more and more people who grew up orthodox are dating out of their rigid caste. The Jewish Press used to have this really dumb shidduch article where a reader writes in and an anonymous male and female would each chime in about their feelings on the subject.
The article is kind of stupid because you never knew the respondents hashkafic levels and their responses were way too mature. Anyway, there was this whole issue for what seemed like many weeks long about whether or not it was unztnius to compliment a girl on a date and of course the blogs at the time ate it up.
